When a Fuel Permit Is Required
You must obtain a Kentucky Temporary Fuel Permit if:
-
You are an out-of-state commercial vehicle entering Kentucky
-
Your vehicle meets any of these criteria:
-
Gross Vehicle Weight (GVW) over 26,000 lbs and two axles, or
-
Three or more axles, regardless of weight, or
-
A combination vehicle over 26,000 lbs
-
-
You do not have an IFTA license or decals
The permit ensures fuel taxes are properly paid while operating in Kentucky.
When You Do NOT Need a Fuel Permit
-
Your vehicle is registered under IFTA (fuel taxes are reported quarterly through IFTA)
-
Your vehicle is exempt (small trucks under 26,000 lbs or certain non-commercial vehicles)
Key Points
-
Fuel permits are usually valid for 10 days.
-
Must be purchased before entering Kentucky
-
Permit must be carried in the truck and shown upon request
-
Frequent carriers may find it more cost-effective to get IFTA registration rather than multiple temporary permits
Tip for Carriers:
If you operate across multiple states often, IFTA registration simplifies reporting and avoids repeated fuel permit fees.
