Kentucky fuel permits and IFTA:
Kentucky Fuel Permits

1. IFTA Overview

The International Fuel Tax Agreement (IFTA) is a cooperative agreement among U.S. states and Canadian provinces that simplifies fuel tax reporting for motor carriers operating in multiple jurisdictions. If you have an IFTA decal and license, you generally do not need separate state fuel permits in member states, including Kentucky.

2. Kentucky Fuel Permit Requirements

Kentucky requires a fuel use permit for motor carriers operating in the state who:

  • Operate commercial motor vehicles (CMVs) with three or more axles, or

  • Operate a two-axle vehicle with a gross vehicle weight over 26,000 lbs, or

  • Are not registered under IFTA but are using fuel in Kentucky.

3. When You Do NOT Need a Kentucky Fuel Permit

You do not need a Kentucky fuel permit if:

  • You are IFTA-registered and have an IFTA decal displayed on your vehicle.

  • Your vehicle is exempt from IFTA reporting (e.g., certain local government vehicles) and falls under other exemptions provided by the state.

4. Temporary or Trip Permits

If you are not registered under IFTA and plan to operate in Kentucky for a short period, you can obtain a temporary fuel use permit (trip permit). This allows you to legally operate in the state without IFTA registration.

  • Cost: Varies by vehicle weight

  • Duration: Typically valid for a single trip or a few days

 Summary:

  • IFTA-registered carriers: No Kentucky fuel permit required.

  • Non-IFTA carriers: Kentucky fuel permit required (annual or temporary).
