Kentucky's freight and logistics sector is experiencing significant growth, driven by its strategic location, infrastructure investments, and expanding industrial base. Here's an overview of the current trends and future projections:

Freight Volume and Value

  • Current Freight Movement: In 2022, Kentucky's freight system transported 502 million tons of goods valued at $605 billion, ranking it 15th in the nation for freight value. 

  • Projected Growth: From 2022 to 2050, freight moved annually by trucks in Kentucky is expected to increase by 53% in weight and 99% in value, marking the 11th highest projected increase in the U.S.  


Infrastructure and Investments

  • Logistics Facilities: Since 2017, Kentucky has seen nearly 250 new or expanded logistics and distribution facilities, with investments totaling over $5.7 billion and the creation of more than 18,600 jobs.  

  • Strategic Location: Kentucky is within a day's drive of 65% of the U.S. population, enhancing its appeal as a logistics hub.  


Employment and Industry Growth

  • Job Creation: The logistics sector in Kentucky employs over 91,000 people, with more than 7,500 full-time jobs announced across over 115 facility expansion and new location projects since 2020. 

  • Regional Development: Northern Kentucky is projected to see a 7.4% growth in logistics employment by 2025, driven by its strategic position and infrastructure.  


Export Growth

  • Record Exports: In 2023, Kentucky's exports reached a record $40.2 billion, a 16.6% increase from the previous year. 

  • Top Export Categories: Aerospace products and parts led exports with over $13.3 billion, followed by pharmaceuticals, motor vehicles, motor vehicle parts, and basic chemicals.  


Multimodal Infrastructure

  • Riverports and Rail: Kentucky's multimodal freight system includes riverports and rail facilities that are critical for efficient freight movement. 

  • Air Cargo: Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport (CVG) is a significant cargo hub, with ongoing investments to enhance its capacity.
