Kentucky Weight-Mile Tax and Compliance Guide

What Is the Kentucky Weight-Mile Tax?

The Kentucky Weight-Mile Tax is a state-imposed tax on commercial motor vehicles based on their weight and miles traveled on public highways in Kentucky. It applies primarily to vehicles:

  • With gross weight over 60,000 pounds

  • Operating on Kentucky state-maintained highways

  • Engaged in intrastate or interstate commerce

This tax is separate from federal fuel taxes and IRP (International Registration Plan) obligations.

Who Must Pay the Weight-Mile Tax?

Carriers required to pay the Kentucky Weight-Mile Tax include:

  • Trucking companies operating commercial vehicles above the weight threshold

  • Owner-operators with qualifying trucks

  • Out-of-state carriers traveling on Kentucky roads for commercial purposes

Exemptions:

  • Government vehicles

  • Certain agricultural equipment

  • Vehicles operating exclusively on private property

 How the Tax Is Calculated

The tax is based on two main factors:

  1. Vehicle Weight: Heavier vehicles pay more per mile.

  2. Miles Traveled in Kentucky: You must report the number of miles your commercial vehicle travels within state boundaries.

The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) publishes the current weight-mile tax rates annually. Rates increase with higher weight categories.
