To operate an oversize or overweight commercial vehicle legally in Kentucky, carriers must obtain the appropriate permit through the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC). The state requires specific vehicle, company, and load information to ensure safe routing and compliance with size and weight regulations. Below is a complete list of everything you need before applying.
Obtaining a Kentucky Trucking Permit

1. Carrier and Company Information

To start your permit application, you must provide:

  • Company name and address

  • USDOT number

  • KYU number (for carriers over 59,999 lbs operating in Kentucky)

  • Federal EIN (Tax ID)

  • Contact name, phone number, and email

2. Vehicle Information

You must provide detailed specifications about the vehicle or combination unit:

  • Truck/tractor license plate number and state

  • Unit number (optional but useful for fleets)

  • Vehicle type (tractor, straight truck, etc.)

  • Registered gross weight

  • Axle weights and axle spacing

3. Load Information

Kentucky requires detailed information about the load being transported:

  • Type of load (e.g., construction equipment, modular home, machinery, beams)

  • Whether the load is divisible or non-divisible

  • Overall loaded dimensions:

    • Height

    • Width

    • Length (overall)

    • Front and rear overhang

  • Gross weight of the loaded vehicle

  • Route constraints based on load characteristics

4. Proposed Travel Route

To issue a safe and legal travel path, KYTC requires:

  • Origin and destination

  • Specific roads or highway numbers (if known)

  • Requested travel date(s)

  • Any preferred route (optional)

Note: Kentucky may adjust route choices based on bridge weight limits, construction zones, or oversize restrictions.

5. Permit Type Information

You must indicate which type of permit you need:

  • Single-trip oversize permit

  • Single-trip overweight permit

  • Annual oversize permit

  • Annual overweight decal

  • Superload permit

For superloads, KYTC may also require:

  • Route surveys

6. Escort / Pilot Car Information (If Required)

If the load exceeds certain thresholds, you may need to provide:

  • Number of escorts

  • Pilot car certification (KY-approved)

7. Payment Information

You'll need:

  • Credit card, or

  • Active KYTC permit account

Tips for a Smooth Permit Application

  • Double-check all axle spacing and weights—incorrect figures can cause delays.

  • Know the exact load dimensions before submitting the application.

  • Submit early if applying for superloads, as reviews take longer.

  • Ensure your KYU number is active and in good standing.
