Who Needs a KYU Number in Kentucky?
You are required to have a KYU number if your operation meets all of the following conditions:
1. Heavy Vehicle Weight
- Your truck has a combined gross weight of 60,000 lbs or more (59,999+ threshold).
2. Travel in Kentucky
- You drive on Kentucky public highways, even if:
- You are just passing through
- You are not based in Kentucky
3. Commercial Use
- You operate as:
- For-hire carrier
- Private carrier
- Owner-operator
- Fleet (in-state or out-of-state)
Who Does NOT Need a KYU Number?
You generally do NOT need a KYU number if:
- Your vehicle is under 60,000 lbs
- You operate farm-plated vehicles (exempt in many cases)
- Your truck exceeds 80,000 lbs and operates under overweight permits instead
Important Things to Know
- KYU applies to both interstate and intrastate carriers
- It is separate from IFTA (fuel tax) — many carriers must have both
- You must file quarterly reports, even if you drove zero miles in Kentucky
- Temporary permits are available for one-time or short trips
Simple Example
- A semi-truck (80,000 lbs) hauling freight through Kentucky → KYU required
- A 26,000 lb box truck → KYU NOT required
- An out-of-state carrier passing through Kentucky → KYU still required
